Saturn Retrograde – March 14, 2015 to August 2, 2015

Saturn

What does Saturn Retrograde mean for you?

Firstly, here is a little overview of Saturn in your chart.

Saturn is transiting Sagittarius from December 8, 2014 to December 19, 2017. Saturn transits a sign from anywhere around 2 1/2 years to 3 years in a sign. When a planet goes retrograde, it isn’t actually going backwards but because it is slowing down while the other planets are still moving forward at regular speed, it appears as though it is going backwards. Imagine two trains going at the same speed when suddenly one begins to slow down, it will appear as though the one that is slowing down is going backwards away from the other.

Saturn is currently transiting Sagittarius, the sign of freedom, expansion, and broad horizons.

Let’s break down the elements of this transit:

The words associated with Saturn are: responsibilities, rules, discipline, structure, restrictions, lessons, learning, toughness, ordeal, austerity, coldness, taskmaster, and on a more positive note, maturity, wisdom, stability, ambition, perseverance, determination, and security.

Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter and its word associations are almost the direct opposite of Saturn’s. The associations to Jupiter are luck, abundance, growth, knowledge, warmth, horizon, cooperation, and self-confidence.

As you can see, while Saturn is touring the sign of Sagittarius, you will find that both these forces are at odds with each other, and at the same time, will feed off and balance each other. This is a story of two extremes where, at times, they will push and pull at each other, and at other times, will hold hands to achieve their goals.

These are the true characteristics found in a truly successful person, and the old adage of “10% luck and 90% hard work” comes to mind and will stand this test during the time that Saturn transits Sagittarius.

In general, these two influences will be teaching you to balance your forward movement with your reflective moments. While Jupiter charges forward with enthusiasm, Saturn sits back and calculates, plans its attack, and controls each step. This is when you will learn to be disciplined and stick to the plan as well as learning to let go when Jupiter is ready to charge forward. You will notice a certain rush of enthusiasm tempered with some good practical reservation during this transit.

The area of influence is where Saturn is situated in your chart and this will determine where your lessons will be concentrated. Note: You can also look to where Jupiter is in the current chart to see where your luck, abundance and help will come from during 2015.

Saturn transits are about learning to be disciplined and structured, in your methods, your plans, and your objectives. This is the time where you will be forced to learn how to balance your responsibilities and to structure them accordingly. Saturn is never about lessons that we want to learn, these are lessons that are forced upon us but help us in the long run. When Saturn is at odds with the rulership of a house is where the challenge is the greatest, but consequently, it is also where the lessons garnered will have the most impact. We learn best when the stakes are higher and when the challenges force us to face issues and matters that we would prefer to sweep under the rug.

At the end of this blog, I will give you a brief synopsis by sign to give you an idea of where Saturn’s influence is affecting you. When Saturn retrogrades back into Scorpio, you will also have to look to where Pluto is located in your chart (it rules Scorpio) and you will notice ripples in that direction as well. The themes you dealt with for the last two to three years will be reviewed (again) to make sure that you crossed all your t’s and dotted all your i’s, especially those you may have skipped over or brushed off because it became all too much. Now that you’re seasoned to those themes, it shouldn’t be as painful this time around. In fact, I believe that it will be a positive overview where you will realize just how far you have come, and how much you are now able to handle as a result of the Saturn/Pluto transit.

What happens when Saturn goes retrograde?

Saturn will begin its retrograde motion in Sagittarius on March 14 and then back into Scorpio (yes, those lessons again) from mid-June to August, before going back to direct motion. Along with the lessons come the testing and reflective periods and this is the effect you will feel when Saturn digs its heels even deeper than it does when it is in direct motion. On the one hand, you will feel as though you’re sinking further into the quagmire, and on the other hand, with clipboard in hand, you will be able to review and check off where you made significant strides and where you may have missed the mark. You will be able to fix these potholes during this retrograde period so that you can tuck all those hard lessons you were supposed to learn during Saturn in Scorpio away for good – or at least for a good long time – since Saturn takes 28-1/2 years to tour all the signs.

Lessons in Discipline and Learning to Deal with Challenges?

Where Saturn is found in the chart, it will slow down (or highlight) those areas of your life for you to be able to discern what you need to learn out of its transit. As life involves many different facets, the same happens when certain areas of your life are affected. It causes a ripple effect into other areas of your life.

This will be your chance to go through and check that you have indeed dealt with those challenges and you will come out better for it. Reviewing is a necessary step in any natural evolution of a life cycle. With Pluto, I can understand that some of you are thinking, “Oh no, not again, it was so hard and uncomfortable the first time around!”

For example, in my life, the moment Saturn moved into Scorpio, in my 3rd house, my five siblings and I dealt with the passing of our father. Past issues, childhood traumas, and loyalties concerning the patriarch of the family came up. It was an uncomfortable period filled with regret and anger and, obviously, an extremely sad moment at the same time. Saturn in the 3rd house included dealing with siblings, conscious choice, and communication. I’m sure each of you will be nodding recognizing your own personal ordeals and challenges you faced during that time.

The lessons and hardships some of us had to endure during Saturn’s tour of Scorpio were harsh and for some, life changing. Saturn/Pluto lessons are earth-moving and aim right for your inner core: your psyche, those nagging gut-wrenching feelings, life cycle issues, and your dues. Do you have the prerequisites to continue with your Saturn/Jupiter lessons? Did you do all your assignments and give them your 100%? Did you peel the onion of your psyche and reveal all the layers to get to that inner core and deal with those nagging issues once and for all? Did you truly change or fix those elements that were needed to move forward armed with all the tools you require for the next step in your journey? These are only some of the principles of Pluto… and only you will know whether you have done what is necessary.

So, for the next 5 months, slow down and breathe deeply, get out your clipboard with the list of things you had to deal with and go through each item, checking them off one at a time, knowing that you have completely dealt with them by analyzing each aspect carefully and methodically. Then, close the door on them because you won’t have to deal with them again for another 28.5 years.
